Green Sand Beach, also known as Papakolea Beach, is located in a bay that is a cinder cone which was formed over 49,000 years ago. Papakolea, in Hawaiian means plover flats and is home to Pacific Golden Plovers during winter. The cinder cone contains olivine, also known as peridot, when in gem form. Olivine is considered the Hawaiian Diamond. The source of the green sand is the olivine crystals.

There is a trail that you can hike down to the beach, which is rugged or locals offer rides for a fee to drive you down.
